I came across a vehicle from Stebbings online and, without hesitation, decided to proceed with the purchase — even paying a deposit before physically seeing the car. My decision was largely influenced by the strong customer reviews I had read and my own confidence that a family-run business like Stebbings would uphold values of honesty, integrity, and respect while prioritising customer experience. As someone who teaches business and customer experience at a university, I trusted my instincts. Sadly, I was wrong.
Upon my arrival on the day of collection, Neamh pointed out a dent on the driver’s door, assuring me that management had agreed to fix it. On that assurance, I went ahead and paid the full price, trusting the matter would be resolved promptly.
However, nearly a month after purchase, the dent remained unrepaired. I was told that my details had been passed to a workman who would contact me to arrange the repair — that call never came. I have since had to call Stebbings weekly, explaining the situation repeatedly to different staff members, many of whom seemed completely unaware of the issue.
To make matters worse, the handover process on the day was rushed under the pretext that the bank was about to close and that I needed to transfer the funds immediately. Since it was a Saturday, I felt compelled to complete the transaction without further checks. Only later did I discover that the charger for the fully electric car was dysfunctional — something I only realised when I attempted to use a public charging station in London.
When I contacted Stebbings to report the issue, I was told that “management said you were supposed to raise such complaints within 24 hours of sale” — an astonishingly insensitive and unethical response. How could anyone reasonably expect a buyer of a fully electric car to know the charger was defective within 24 hours, especially when a charger is rarely tested immediately if one has a home charging setup? I find it cruel, misleading, and bordering on fraudulent to sell an electric car with a non-functional charger and then refuse accountability under such a flimsy excuse.
The car was also sold without carpets, which I only realised after transferring the funds. When I raised this, Neamh said she would speak to management to arrange “some used mats” if I didn’t mind. She later texted to say management had declined.
It eventually took nearly two months before the promised dent repair was done — a process that should have taken days. To add to the frustration, I am still waiting for my V5 form from the DVLA, despite being told it would arrive within two weeks of purchase.
I was given a three-month warranty, which is now gradually running out, yet Stebbings has failed to resolve issues that were reported well within that warranty period.
Frankly, this entire experience has been disappointing, stressful, and completely contrary to what one would expect from a business that markets itself as a reputable, family-run dealership. I expected Stebbings to uphold the family values of honesty, integrity, and respect — values that should distinguish it from large, impersonal companies. Ironically, I drove nearly three hours from my home to buy from Stebbings, instead of simply purchasing from Big Motoring World next door, because I believed in the promise of personal service and trust.
Sadly, my experience suggests otherwise. I would strongly caution unsuspecting customers to be extremely vigilant, check everything (including chargers and accessories) before transferring any funds, and insist that all promises are put in writing.
Stebbings, you have not only lost a customer but also damaged the very reputation that once convinced me to buy from you in the first place.
I had a great experience at Stebbings Car Superstore because there were plenty of cars to try, and they were open, unlike other places we have been in the past where we had to go to request that the car should be opened each time. The information about esch car was on a sheet of paper in the car , we weren't expected to use an app which we don't have. Jake, the salesman, was very pleasant and helpful.
The experience at Stebbings Car Superstore was fantastic because everything was smooth andxstress free and everything was explained clearly.
