New government proposals to scrap MOT's! A financial aid or a car crash waiting to happen?

“Axing the MOT test every other year would save motorists just £27.50 per annum” (Aftersales, 2022) Is this a wise decision that could help millions of Britts struggling with the rising cost of living prices or is this a financial sacrifice in the wrong area?

How much will drivers save?

Currently, the tests cost £54 for the average small car or van. The annual saving of £27 a year, is it worth the risk? The concern here, is that drivers, may in fact face larger financial costs in the long run, if minor issues are left unchecked, develop into larger more significant dangers. The AA’s head of roads policy, Jack Cousens, reported “Though well intended, moving the yearly spend on an MOT to every two years could make costs worse for drivers with higher repair bills.” (Allan, 2022)

What are the dangers?

For some, the annual test of roadworthiness is the only time their vehicle gets checked and tested for safety. Scrapping the current MOT law would mean those road user’s vehicles may end up neglected and we could see a spike in road accidents. Surely this seems like a severe breach of judgement.

What the proposed benefits?

As families across the UK are feeling squeezed under the growing pressure of living costs skyrocketing, the main benefit behind this controversial new proposal is to ease the financial strain faced by millions and help citizens save in a ‘less crucial area.’

What affect will this have on the environment?

Inefficient cars burn more fuel. Scrapping the regulated checks could mean the standards for motors could slip. Higher fuel emission from vehicles left unchecked, could have serious negative impacts on the environment and certainly, is not an atmosphere we want to be driving in! With talks of electric cars and environmentally friendly methods of transport on the rise, is this recent discussion a step backwards?

Perhaps a short-term reduction in VAT would be a bigger help to people court in the fuel or food dilemma and prove a safer idea. JudgeService would like to know your thoughts?
